Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Claudia Garcia de Spencer. As some of you might guess from my accent, I grew up in Mexico, but I am now a proud citizen of the United States, living here in San Diego County. I am also proud to be a member of the San Diego Minutemen.
However, upon my arrival here, I was immediately struck with the kind and generous nature of the people of the United States, in sharp contrast to my lifelong experience in Mexico; and also very different from the stories told by returning Mexicans. Never once in the years that I’ve been here have I experienced the slightest discrimination, disrespect, or racism based upon my Mexican heritage. Not from those who know me; not from those who don’t. Never. Despite what you’ve heard so often in the news and chanted in the streets, I can assure you from my own experience that Americans are not a racist people.

I am speaking here tonight because of concern for my country, my city, myself and my family. I am watching as everything around me becomes more and more like what I left in Mexico. More crime, more violence, more trash; and more contempt for this culture, the English language and the US Constitution….in general, less consideration for our fellow human beings. Because I am Mexican by birth, it is clear to me that a great deal of this deterioration is due to the actions of those who are here illegally. As an example, let me point out that one of my relatives was murdered in Mexico, and the criminals escaped to the United States to avoid capture by the police. I can only assume that they continued to commit criminal acts while in this country.
I don’t really understand why a country as powerful as the United States allows this to happen and destroy what the many good people have built here for over 200 years. But I do know that we must do what we can. One small step would be to close the day labor gathering site at the corner of Santa Fe and Escondido Blvd. I know that many of these men are here illegally, and are therefore criminals. I have a young daughter, and I cannot imagine any responsible parent allowing their child to walk to Lincoln Middle School through a crowd of men like this. I feel sorry for the businesses whose customers must navigate through these men in the parking lot. I feel sorry for the nearby residents who must be in fear for their property and their safety. And I feel anger for those who are damaging the country that has welcomed me with kindness and respect.
